So I was going to rush this write up out after seeing the performance, but decided to sleep on it and absorb it. Yea… it was a hell of a performance. And I’m pretty sure this dude can go much harder.
His name is WordSpit and he’s making his name known in the underground scene. He made an appearance during the auditions for America’s Got Talent. He’s also done shows all over New York City, including the famed SOB’s near Greenwich Village. Last week, he performed for the CMJ Music Marathon at a spot called Littlefield, which is about 8 blocks away from the new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn’s downtown area. I’m not going to say I didn’t know what to expect,
because I’ve heard next to everything about this guy. What I will say is I still wasn’t prepared for what he dished out.
His versatility is crazy. His lyrics pop because he makes sense and his emotion is present, which makes the music that much more engaging. Getting into the performance, skyrocketed energy from the word “GO”. His improv skills to pull the crowd in picked up the energy. All of these elements put up a very well balanced performance.
One added effect was his band, the Illest, which gave the performance that nice live touch, especially when WordSpit allowed the solo’s towards the end. The next was his featured artist for the night, Mr. Reed, who gave an awesome expedition of vocals on the songs LCA (Lights, Camera, Action) and Take Me Away. The latter was an especially emotional one for WordSpit. He recounts an incident where an old man’s words & the rekindled love for his father was the only thing that stood between his enemy and the barrel of his gun. He puts his all in his performances, engaging the crowd and leaving no emotion untouched.
Like I said, I wasn’t prepared.
After the show, I let him know “Dude, that was some hot shit!,” and afterwards, got a promo CD from him.
If you like it, go buy it off iTunes.
Now the mixtape, titled The Coolest BBOI Stance, has 18 tracks of pure lyrical domination. Why hasn’t this guy been picked up yet? My favorites have got to be Poets Haiku, Rap City and Chop Suey. The skits are cool too. Most of the tracks are produced by JFace. It’s a hot project. Go get that on iTunes NOW… Especially after reading this. You should feel compelled.
I’m gonna help you with that… https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-coolest-bboi-stance/id369208886.
